Term I Highlights
September & October
Our students spent the better part of September settling into their new classes, getting to know each other, and learning classroom and school procedures. Understanding the school's and classroom's expectations is essential for a successful year. We would like to thank everyone who came out to our Back-to-School Night and Parent Orientation workshop where some of these goals were discussed, jazakumAllahu khayran!
After briefly reviewing what was learned in May, homework, quizzes and tests were given on a more regular basis throughout October- alhamdulillah our students are developing great study habits!
We encourage parents to check their child's take-home folder and homework packets or agenda books daily. Please try to read with or encourage your child to read for at least 20 minutes a day. Children who read or are read to regularly develop stronger language skills and a greater vocabulary base than those who receive little to no exposure.
As we approach the end of Term 1 (November 23rd), students in third grade and above will begin to prepare for the Terra Nova standardized test. Students will be taught test strategies, become familiar with the format of the test, and gain Math, Language, and Reading skills through weekly test practice sheets.
We encourage parents to go over and review any test material returned to the student. The material covered is aligned with grade level curricula for Math, Reading and Language Arts, therefore it is very important that students do well on their day-to-day academic studies.

Refugee Supply Drive
IST is proud to participate in the local Refugee Supply Drive, a joint ICNA Relief and PA Refugee Task Force project to assist refugee families arriving in Pennsylvania and the surrounding areas. The organizations will collect much needed household, bedding, furniture, cleaning and hygienic products in new (or like-new) condition to distribute to refugee families.
In a race for good deeds, our students will compete for who can bring in the most number of items to help our brothers and sisters in need. Please see the attached flier for more details and send in any of the listed items to school with your child. JazakumAllahu khayran for your support.
Six Flags Read To Succeed
The Six Flags Read to Succeed Six Hour Reading Club has officially begun for 2016-2017! This is a great way to get kids excited about reading. The guidelines are simple: from now until the end of February, students must complete six hours of reading on their own and log their time on the form that they were given by their teachers. Students who complete the six-hour requirement will be awarded a free, one-time, admission ticket to Six Flags!
Only students in KG through 6th grade may participate. For KG students, parents may read to their child and encourage them to read and sound out simple books. Happy reading!
Muslim Spelling Bee
Baytul-Iman Academy, located in Keansburg, New Jersey will be hosting this year's Muslim Spelling Bee on December 10th, 2016. IST families are encouraged to enroll their child in the contest. Registration is an individual process and only available online. If you would like for your child to participate, please click Register Online. Registration deadline is December 7th.
Please visit Muslim Spelling Bee for more information on study material, contest rules, guidelines, and updates regarding the event.
IST is looking for a few volunteers to help clean out the storage modular that is currently parked in the large parking lot adjacent to the masjid. Removing the storage will accommodate more people during Jummu'ah and other masjid-related events. If you are free and able to move, lift, or organize boxes and other items, please let us know!
Jummu'ah Lunch Sales
Alhamdulillah, the Jummu'ah lunch sales were a success last year and we would like to continue it again this year.
We are in need of one or two volunteers who can man the table after Friday prayer for about 30 to 40 minutes and sell the packed lunches.

Looking to make an impact on school policies, organize committees and extracurricular events for students, staff, or parents? If so, then consider being a part of the IST PTO!
