Full-Time Hifz Program
The Full-Time Hifz Program aims for serious students to complete Hifz al-Qur’an according to the tenets of tajweed and tarteel. During these years, the primary focus will be on memorization of Qur’an and learning Islamic obligations (fard ‘ayn)
Admission Policy
Admission to the Full-Time Hifz Program is based on the following:
- Students are admitted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Interested students typically begin preparation in 3rd grade, after they have completed one full reading of the Qur'an with proper tajweed through the Nazira program.
- A student begins the program officially after completing the memorization of Juz 'Amma (30th part of the Quran) after the Nazira program.
- New or transferred students interested in joining the Full-Time Hifz Program must pass a nazira (reading) test and are accepted only with the approval of the Hifz teacher.
- Student’s acceptance will be conditional, based upon behavior and performance. If this is not met, the school reserves the right to remove the child from the program.
- Students who register after the classes have been filled will be placed on a waiting list and will be contacted if and when space becomes available.
Hifz Responsibilities
The following rules are to be adhered to by the students, parents and teachers:
Parental Responsibilities
Student Responsibilities
Teacher Responsibilities
Parental Responsibilities
- The process of becoming a hafiz requires consistency on the part of both parent and student. Regular attendance and punctuality are crucial. When the process of learning is disrupted by irregular attendance and tardiness, the student suffers a loss of experience that cannot be entirely regained.
- You will have to give priority to your child’s Hifz al-Qur’an over any other activities at home.
- Ensure your child abides by all program rules as stated in the Parent-Student Handbook.
- Your child must spend at least 2 hours at home after school memorizing his/her sabaq (day’s lesson) and 45 minutes in the morning at home before class practicing his/her lesson. Your child should review his/her sabaq and sabaq para (past lessons) over the weekend. You are advised to set up a schedule to ensure your child is using his/her time wisely and sufficient time is allocated to memorization.
- Keep in touch with your child’s teacher in order to know how your child is progressing.
Student Responsibilities
- Abide by all Islamic rules and manners including behavior and dress. For boys, this includes wearing a jubba/long khamees and a kufi. For girls, this includes hijab and abaya.
- Carry your own Qur’an with you at all times. Also, the same Qur’an must be used throughout the Hifz program.
- Mark the necessary tajweed rules with the help of the teacher before class is dismissed.
- Listen to recordings of the lesson to avoid tajweed mistakes.
- Always recite the Qur’an loudly and with a slow tone. Reciting loudly is essential for the best results.
- The Qur’an cannot be memorized in a place of distraction. Set up a study place where there aren’t any distractions.
- Before memorizing the lesson, read it thoroughly at least 10 times attentively. All mistakes should be underlined and corrected when memorizing the lessons.
- The best way to memorize your lesson is to memorize one ayah (verse) at a time. After memorizing one ayah, go to the next. Once this is done, recite both ayahs together. Then proceed to the next ayah.
- Once you have completed memorizing your lesson, read it over by memory a few times and then read it to someone at home to ensure there are no mistakes.
- When practicing your daur (revision), abide by all tajweed rules and check mutashabihaat ayahs (those verses that are similar). Pay attention to all previous mistakes marked by your teacher. All corrected mistakes should be repeated three times when reviewing.
- Sabaq must be memorized at home each night and reviewed the next morning before coming to class.
Teacher Responsibilities
- If a student is not completing his/her work, sabaq will be stopped. The student will not proceed in his/her memorization of new sabaq until all previously memorized lessons are mastered.
- In sabaq, students are not allowed to make more than one mistake.
- In sabaq para, students cannot make more than three mistakes.
- In daur, students are not allowed to make more than three mistakes in half a juz.
- After a student completes a juz, he should not start the next juz until the previous one is perfect. Students will be evaluated after memorizing 1, 3 and 5 juz. This will continue until the Qur’an has been memorized in its entirety. The teacher may stop the student’s sabaq, if necessary, for an evaluation.
- There will be a final exam at the end of every year and will take place over the course of three weeks.
Hifz Curriculum
ISLAMIC STUDIES
The Islamic studies class consists of weekly lessons in `aqeedah (beliefs), akhlaaq (character), taareekh (history), and hadith (sayings of the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him). In addition, each student will be taught essential components of tahaarah (purification) and salaah required for daily Muslim life.
TAJWEED - QIRA'AH
Learning proper recitation of the Qur'an is necessary and an obligation on every Muslim. The Tajweed-Qira'ah class is dedicated to improve each student's recitation of the Qur'an according to the rules of tajweed and Hafs qira'ah. There is also an emphasis on preparing for public recitation.
SECULAR STUDIES
Although the primary goal of the Hifz Program is memorization of the Qur'an, some time is allotted towards continuing secular studies. The Secular Studies class is a bare-bone continuation of Reading and Mathematics. Parents are expected to make their own arrangements for any other secular studies they feel are necessary.
